The How-To Lounge: New Avenues to Meet People

Meeting new guys is not all that hard — just head out to your local pub for a drink and smile a lot! But meeting quality people who you’d actually want to interact with sober and introduce to your friends is another matter entirely. And while throwing out suggestions like going to a bar or starting up conversations at your gym can be helpful for some, most of us have been there and done that. In an attempt to broaden our horizons, I’ve tried to think outside the dating box. To see my new ideas, just read more.

  • Get the word out there. Email your friends and ask your mom to talk to her friends. It may sound desperate, but try to think of it as practical. At least you know they’ll all be looking out for your well-being.
  • Do the online dating thing. I know for some the idea of meeting someone online seems weird or even embarrassing, but the days of online dating as taboo are over! Embrace the tools you have at your disposal, because you won't know until you try!
  • Try a dating event like a singles' night or a speed dating dinner. They may not have the highest success rates, but you’ll know everyone there is looking for a relationship, and that, my friends, is potential.
  • Take a class. School is one of the best places to meet new people. You’re forced to interact on a weekly basis without the stresses and pressures of work. Plus, you might actually learn something!
  • And finally, say yes to the strange requests from your friends and family. Like when your mom asks you to go to her best friend’s sister’s son’s birthday, do it. Or when your friend wants to go to a themed party, go for it. These are the random occasions that make up the stories that start with “It was totally unexpected . . .”

Yes, it’s all about taking chances, but why not? We’re not talking brain surgery here!

I agree with almost famous for the most part.

I like the last suggestion, agreeing to do weird things you wouldnt normally, and sports social clubs seem good too.

I'd also suggest doing volunteer/charity work. Cos maybe you can earn good karma points, too?

I dont agree with the school thing; I'm in grad school right now and its mostly women. And older women.

And my only problem with online dating is that I know the type of guy that I like would never even consider it. I like a really weird uncommon type of man thats sadly hard to come by Sad

I would add, don't be afraid to do things on your own. My husband and I met at a bar when we were both by ourselves. My friend was supposed to go with me but she flaked, so I went alone (another friend's band was playing and I wanted to see them). She says it's the best thing she's ever done for me, and she's right - I wouldn't have talked to anyone but her if she'd been there.

Volunteer doing something you love or take a fun weekend class at community college. Great way to meet people with similar interests.

I do recommend the online thing. I did it and it was just a really easy, fast way to meet a ton of people. It was a lot of fun and I even ended up meeting my husband.

My roommate actually met his girlfriend at the gym (she worked there) so it is completely possible. You can meet guys anywhere you just have to be approachable and friendly or go up to guys you're interested in and strike up a conversation.

I always thought there was a certain stigma attached to online dating until I met my boyfriend. He is an amazing, chivalrous guy, who just happened to not know many people around here, like me. You never know until you try!

I've primarily met my boyfriends through online dating sites or at work. None have worked out for life yet but maybe someday...
